Yogyakarta, often abbreviated as Jogja, is one of the largest cities in Indonesia, located in the southern part of the island of Java. The city is the capital of the D.I. Yogyakarta province and is one of the most important cities in Indonesia in terms of culture, history, and politics.


 

Yogyakarta has been in existence since the 8th century. At that time, the city was the center of the Kingdom of Mataram, known for its beautiful temples and cultural architecture. In the 18th century, Yogyakarta became the capital of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Kingdom, one of the oldest kingdoms in Indonesia.


During World War II, Yogyakarta became an important center for the Indonesian independence movement. On March 1, 1949, Yogyakarta became the capital of the Republic of Indonesia until December 19, 1949, when Jakarta regained its status as the capital.
